Ekurhuleni Bus Rapid Transport system

Four years after staring my own practise, I assisted another company ARG Design as the lead architect for the design and development of the Ekurhuleni (East Rand) bus rapid transport system. The building infrastructure consisted of the stations and bus depot.

The general arrangement plan of the bus depot is shown below.

The bus returns from transporting passengers and enters the depot;

  1. Security Entrance Building
  2. Training Building
  3. Refuelling Building
  4. Wash Bay Building
  5. Water recycling
  6. Bus parking
  7. Bus Maintenance
  8. Spares, paint booth
  9. Canteen
  10. Oil and lubrication
  11. Administration Building
  12. Soccer Field

Bus Depot

As far as size goes, the site is 300m long, with falls of 7m from the top to the bottom. This was a challenge for providing universal access across the whole site. At the security entrance building the travelling distance and times are logged. The refuelling building is under cover as it has inspection pits, the busses undergo a full inspection every day. Similarly, the wash building is also undercover, where the water is collected and recycled. The maintenance building allows for busses to enter from the back and drive through the building.
